Flightrix successfully conducts The Flying Engineer Program (Batch 01)

Dec 29 2013: 2 students, one from MIT Manipal and MIT Chennai, were the first students to participate in The Flying Engineer Program. The 4 day, intense program involved 2 days on Flightrix's simulator, wherein students were exposed to Traditional (Analog-Bendix King Silver Crown Suite) and Modern (Glass-Garmin G1000) Cockpit instrumentation. Further, the students practically studied aircraft performance (plotting various graphs), navigation (VOR, ILS, GPS), and automation (all lateral and vertical modes on the Bendix/King KAP 140 Autopilot). After the intense 2 day simulator session, students made their way to Pondicherry, where they were shown every aspect of the Cessna 172R, and flown on the aircraft, getting to experince maneuvering and various aspects of flight performance & procedures, as well as logging data towards a study of the Cessna 172R. The students have written a report, and the feedback has been very, very positive! This is the single most comprehensive program in aerospace bridging the gap between theory and required practical knowledge and exposure, preparing the aerospace engineers of tomorrow.

Department of Science & Technology and Agastya Foundation, sponsors 22 kids for a highly educative s

Dec 24, 2013: Department of Science & Technology and Agastya Foundation, sponsors 22 kids for a highly educative session at Flightrix The Department of Science and Technology, and Agastya foundation, handpicked the 22 brightest kids in Karnataka excluding the capital Bangalore. The school-going children were in the age group 10-15. Students were explained aerodynamics, in the local language, and in a manner that allowed them to easily assimilate advanced concepts at an early age. Our innovative approaches ensured that students were involved in every activity, which allowed them to grasp concepts better. Students were also given a flying experience on the simulator (by our instructor who holds a commercial pilot license issued by the CAA South Africa and DGCA India) , that allowed them to understand how an airplane is flown, and navigated. Students also built their own Cessna 172 based paper model airplanes, which were later balanced to allow the models to fly. The students left the facility beaming with joy, admitting that the program was something that they had not experienced before. Mr. Ajith Basu, Chief Program Executive at Agastya International Foundation, was present along with Agastya advisors Mr. SRS Rao and MG Subramanian.

Dusshera courses for smart kids

October Week 1/2: 23 school kids who signed up for the Aeroflyer program conceived, designed and delivered by Flightrix spent their Dusshera holidays learning and experiencing a lot in aviation: flying an airplane (in a professional grade FE-UE-04 simulator), instructed by a commerical pilot who holds a license from the CAA, South Africa and DGCA, India, aerospace theory, aircraft construction, and practical demos by an Aerospace Engineer / Acclaimed Technical Journalist with a US Patent and one US Patent Application. Concepts were advanced, but presented in a way that allowed kids in the age group 10-18 to appreciate, assimilate and apply the concepts. Activities included making their very own Cessna 172R model, working with radios to appreciate radio jargon, plotting air routes on maps, working with radio controlled airplanes, drawing and designing airfoils, cockpit instrumentation layout, and aircraft structures. This is the only rich, fun filled, comprehensive program offered nowhere across India. Students were given flying sessions on the simulator, which culminated with the students flying their parents into a landing. Parents were also given a de-brief of their students performance, and how the students may bridge gaps, if any. The feedback for this program has been overwhelmingly positive. This is a 6 day program that may be conducted either consecutively, or over weekends.

Flightrix Sponsors 3 Engineering Students for the Flight Test Program

Sep-Oct 2013: Flightrix sponsored flight test sessions for engineering students, in which students had to collect data to determine the Thrust v/s RPM, and the Drag v/s True Airspeed of a Cessna 172R simulator model. The flight test methodology was pioneered at Flightrix, by Karthik KS (Pilot, DGCA, CAA/South Africa) and Vasuki Prasad (Director/Aerospace Engineer). The flight test sessions were intensive, and students got to write reports in IEEE format. The reports, which documents the procedure, and all relevant graphs, was reviewed by Peter Collin, Head of Flying / Chief Test Pilot, Flight Test / Flight Operations, Raytheon UK, and a freelancing test pilot for FlightGlobal. He has flown 112 aircraft types, was a former Royal Air Force pilot, and a former Red Arrows Pilot. Peter Collins said, " I read your report and it looks spot on! The simulator you've built looks to be an excellent test tool." Flight tests on the simulator were followed by similar tests on a real Cessna 172R, and the results matched very closely, validating the simulator model.

Flightrix conducts surprise test at MIT Manipal

November 20, 2013: Flightrix Conducted a surprise test on Nov 2, 2013, for the Aerospace Engineering students (Year1/2/3/4) of MIT Manipal, to gauge their basics in applied aerodynamics, systems and avionics / instrumentation familiarity. This was to help us understand the gaps between industry-desired knowledge & exposure, and academia-fostered knowledge. The question paper covered analog instrumentation (found on the TB-20 aircraft in their campus, with a Honeywell/Nendix King Silver Crown suite), the Garmin G1000 system, and effects of control surfaces and airflow. The results of the test are visible in the image on the left, where a large majority students scored 50% or less. Those who did well had experience on the simulator, reinforcing our belief that a simulator experience helps students understand aerodynamics, systems, and avionics far better. Dr. Rammohan Pai, HOD of Aerospace Engineering, was present during the event.

First Prototype Simulator Ready.

The very first prototype simulator of Command Sims Pvt. Ltd, was formally inaugurated in a small puja. The simulator, which was built by the founder himself, was a result of nearly 5 months of efforts, which involved detailed design, consultation with pilots, and a lot of hardwork and sweat. Barring the painting, the entire simulator was constructed by hand, by Vasuki Prasad. This demanded all his skills: CAD, Documentation, Carpentry, Electronics design & development, Human factors, software, and most importantly: mechanical design to come up with the prototype. 2 United States Patent applications, having built aircraft LED lights for National Aerospace Laboratories, Designed LED lights and Flight Simulators for Honeywell, Taught engineers flying on simulators, been part of a massive transformational program in the aerospace department of Honeywell, having worked on Airbus flight management systems; all in addition to prior experience at airports, airlines, training centres, and aircraft maintenance centres culminated in a brilliantly designed flight simulator for aerospace engineering colleges, and other professional uses. Yes, the priest got to fly the simulator!
